BMW Develops Laser-Based Head Lamp
Berlin - Bored with the headlights (head lamp) LED-based being the current trend? BMW stepped forward to develop light-based laser beam.
As reported by worldcarfans on Monday (05/09/2011) This system uses a series of laser diodes that produce energy that is converted into light via a fluorescent phosphor material.
The laser light is promising to provide better lighting than traditional LED lights and BMW claims the system is also able to save energy.
Diode laser has been used in several consumer products today. One advantage of laser is its size. With a size of 10 microns, the laser diode is 100 times smaller than the smallest LED current size of 1 mm.
Another comparison, if the LEDs produce light at 100 lumens (photometric unit for light) per watt, the laser produces light equivalent to 170 lumens.
If everything is in accordance with the plans of BMW believes this system will be implemented within the next few years. It also shows that BMW are serious about developing a lighting technology.
